  • Wide Insurance Acceptance: SunCloud Health Chicago is in-network with numerous insurance plans. This includes big names like BlueCross BlueShield (including PPO and many HMO networks), Aetna, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, Cigna, Humana, Tricare (for eligible military families), and more. We regularly add contracts with insurers; if you don’t see your plan on our list, reach out anyway – we may accept it or can negotiate a one-time agreement. Using in-network benefits typically means lower costs for you (just your deductible/copay). Our intake team will gladly verify your coverage and explain what your policy covers for IOP.
  • Out-of-Network? We’ve Got You: If we are out-of-network with your insurance, all is not lost. Many PPO plans still reimburse a substantial portion of IOP costs. Q: How long does the IOP program usually last?

A: Our Intensive Outpatient Program is not one-size-fits-all, so length can vary. Generally, clients participate for about 8 to 12 weeks. Some might stay a bit shorter, some longer – it all depends on your progress and needs. We typically recommend sticking with IOP until you’ve met key treatment goals and feel stable enough to step down to weekly therapy. 

On average, 3 months is a common duration to achieve solid results, but we’ll work with you to determine the right timeframe. Remember, it’s flexible: if you need a couple more weeks to feel confident, we’ve got you, and if you’re ready to “graduate” sooner, we’ll celebrate that too.

A: Getting started is as simple as reaching out. You can call us for a free phone consultation where we’ll gather some basic information and set up an in-depth assessment. A: IOP is less intensive than inpatient or residential treatment, but more intensive than traditional once-a-week therapy. In inpatient or residential, you’re at a facility 24/7 – sleeping there and receiving care throughout the day (this is for acute situations or when round-the-clock support is needed). PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) is a step down from inpatient: it usually runs 5-6 hours a day, 5 days a week, often like a full daytime job of therapy. 

Our IOP, by contrast, is 3-5 hours a day, 3-5 days a week. You don’t reside with us; you come in for programming then go home. IOP provides a major therapeutic dose while still granting you the freedom to maintain home life. It’s a great middle ground for those who need structure and support but don’t require 24-hour care. If at any point in IOP you need more help, we can step you up to PHP or residential. And if standard outpatient isn’t enough, IOP steps you up from 1 hour a week to 15+ hours of therapy a week. It’s all about matching intensity to what you need.

A: You will engage in a variety of therapies during IOP. Expect a mix of group therapy (the core of IOP, several times a week), individual therapy (at least once weekly one-on-one with your therapist), and possibly family therapy sessions. The specific therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training, trauma-informed therapy (which could involve EMDR if appropriate), mindfulness practices, and more – all tailored to your situation. 

We also have specialized groups, for example: a DBT skills group, a relapse prevention group for those with substance issues, a nutrition/body image group for those with eating concerns, etc. Rest assured, all our therapies are evidence-based and led by qualified professionals. You won’t be doing any experimental or hokey treatments. It’s normal to be unsure what to expect, but your therapist will explain each modality as you go. Many clients find they actually enjoy some of the group activities once they settle in!

A: We will help you track your progress in a few ways. First, you’ll work with your therapist to set specific goals (like “reduce panic attacks from daily to less than once a week” or “resume attending classes regularly”). We’ll check in on those goals weekly. Second, we use questionnaires periodically – for example, you might fill out a PHQ-9 depression inventory at intake and again at discharge to see the change in your score. (On average, our patients see their depression and other symptom scores improve significantly by the end.)

Third, you’ll feel the difference – perhaps you notice you’re sleeping better, or your family mentions you seem calmer. We also encourage you to journal or reflect on your journey. If something isn’t improving, we adjust your plan. Our team meets often to discuss each case, so we’re always evaluating and tweaking to maximize your success. By graduation, most patients report a dramatic drop in distress and a boost in coping abilities. We can’t promise a “cure,” but we aim for measurable, meaningful progress – and we achieve it regularly. Success for us is when you say, “I’m doing better.”

A: Success can be defined in different ways, but we measure it by symptom improvement and patient satisfaction. Many of our IOP participants show a significant reduction in symptoms like depression and anxiety from admission to discharge, based on standardized self-report tools and consistent clinical observations from our team.). For instance, our outcomes report shows aggregate improvement in depression scores (PHQ-9) for both adults and adolescents by program’s end. 

We also track functional improvements – most clients return to work or school, if they had been unable, by the time they finish. In terms of abstinence for those with addiction, many maintain sobriety through the program and beyond; however, recovery isn’t always linear, so we focus on continuous improvement and quick re-engagement if relapse happens. We’re proud that a large portion of our referrals come from former clients and their families – a testament that they found our IOP effective enough to recommend to others. While we can’t quote a single “success rate” number (because each individual’s journey is unique), we stand by the effectiveness of our approach. 

In short: the majority of people who complete our IOP feel significantly better and more prepared for life than when they started. We continuously refine our program to keep those success rates high.

A: The cost depends on factors like your insurance coverage and length of stay, but typically, most or all of the cost is covered by insurance if you have a behavioral health benefit. You would be responsible for your copay/coinsurance and any deductible just like any medical service. For those paying out of pocket, we charge a daily or weekly program rate – our admissions team can provide specifics.

 We frame it this way: IOP is an investment in your health, and we do everything to make it worth every penny.

A: We accept many insurance plans – likely yes! We are in-network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (including PPO and many HMOs), Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, Humana, Tricare, and others. We also work with some Kaiser Permanente plans and student insurances. If you have Illinois Medicaid or Medicare, unfortunately we do not take those at this time (nor Medicare supplements).

However, if you’re covered under a spouse/parent private plan or have any commercial insurance, we probably can utilize it. The best way to know is to call us with your insurance info – we’ll verify your benefits and explain exactly what’s covered. Even if we are out-of-network for your plan, many PPOs reimburse a large portion. We’re also open to single-case agreements or working with your carrier for authorization. In summary: we try to make insurance a non-issue for you. Let us do the heavy lifting of figuring out the finances so you can focus on healing.

A: Your safety is our top priority. If you experience a crisis (for example, feeling suicidal, or a severe panic episode) while in our program, we have protocols to support you. During program hours, our clinical team will immediately tend to the situation – we might pull you out of group for one-on-one support, involve our psychiatrist for an urgent eval, or, if needed for safety, assist you to a higher level of care temporarily (like an inpatient stay for stabilization).

A: Absolutely. Privacy and confidentiality are foundational to our care. We follow HIPAA regulations strictly – your participation in our IOP and anything you share with us is protected health information. We will not disclose it to anyone without your written permission, except in rare situations where required by law (such as if there’s an imminent risk to self/others or a child/elder abuse situation, which any therapist is legally obligated to report). 

We understand the stigma that unfortunately can accompany mental health or addiction treatment, and we take extra steps to protect your privacy. Street parking is sometimes available on Clybourn or side streets, though during busy times it might take a couple loops to find a spot.

When you arrive at 1840 N Clybourn, look for the Trader Joe’s sign – our entrance is the same door for the Trader Joe’s grocery (don’t worry, you’re not going into the store, but the elevators are shared). Take the elevator up to the fifth floor and you’ll see signs for SunCloud Health, Suite 520. If you need wheelchair access or have mobility considerations, everything is elevator-accessible and there are ramps where needed.

For those coming from different parts of Chicagoland: We’re a short drive from downtown (The Loop is about 10-15 minutes away by car or a quick train ride). If you’re in Lakeview, Bucktown, Wicker Park, Gold Coast, or surrounding areas, you’ll find us very easy to reach as well – we are basically on the North Side in a central location. Even folks coming from West Town, Lincoln Square, or Evanston have found the commute manageable thanks to the straightforward Red Line connection.

If you’re not familiar with the area, don’t hesitate to call our front desk for directions. We can guide you from the highway (we’re not far from I-90/94 North Ave exit) or from main city landmarks. We can also send you a Google Maps pin via text or email. On our website, there’s a [Directions link] that opens Google Maps for your convenience.

Many clients say that once they’ve been here once, it’s easy to find thereafter. The neighborhood is vibrant and safe, with plenty of shops and cafes. Some of our clients like to arrive a bit early to grab a coffee at the nearby Starbucks or explore the area as part of their routine (exposure therapy to crowded stores, anyone? We’ve had clients practice coping skills in the real world by visiting the shopping center before session).

After your sessions, you have options too – maybe a walk over to the beautiful Oz Park a few blocks east to reflect, or a quick bite at one of the local eateries on North Avenue. Recovery isn’t confined to the therapy room; using those coping skills out in the city is a sign of progress!

In summary, finding us is simple, whether you’re a Chicago city dweller or coming from a suburb. We made sure our location is both centrally located and accessible, because we want to remove any logistical barriers to your attending. If transportation is ever an issue, let us know; occasionally we can assist (like providing transit cards or coordinating ride-shares in special situations).
