Adult Partial Hospitalization Program | Chicago & Surrounding Areas
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Day Treatment Program at SunCloud Health treats substance use disorders, eating disorders, mood disorders, and related trauma in an integrated way. Treatment is designed to provide stabilization for patients with more severe mental health symptoms yet who fall below the threshold of requiring inpatient 24-hour support. While our PHP program offers some of the intensity and structure of a residential mental health treatment program during daytime hours, we provide additional opportunities to practice recovery outside of the controlled treatment environment during evenings at home or in peer-supported apartment communities.
PHP/Day program is currently offered 5 days a week (Monday through Friday), 6 hours per day, at all SunCloud Health locations. Because every patient is unique, the recommended length of stay in PHP depends on each person’s clinical circumstances. Please contact us if you are ready to begin your mental health journey and feel our Full-Day Adult Partial Hospitalization Program might be a good fit for you. Call or email us here.
Integrated Approach for Whole-Person Care
This bio-psycho-social-spiritual treatment program uses evidenced-based care, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness practices, and 12-step facilitation to help patients develop coping skills. Our integrated partial hospitalization program is designed to coordinate treatment across various mental health challenges in order to eliminate the need for patients having to choose which of their disorders deserves priority in terms of treatment. The disruption this type of “tracked” approach creates for the patient in their recovery is eliminated by our cohesive approach, which puts the patient at the center of their mental health treatment.
Video: What is a process group and why does SCH place emphasis on this modality?
Dr. Marcia Nickow, PSY.D., CADC, CGP, Organizational and Senior Clinical Adviser at SunCloud Health, discusses why SunCloud’s treatment model places a lot of emphasis on process groups and what it indicated about its participants in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
Individualized Treatment in a Sacred Healing Space
At SunCloud Health, we seek to ensure all decisions and care plans are aligned with our core values of first-in-class quality of care, integration of care, transparency, cooperation, and teamwork. We believe in being held accountable for the treatment that we provide, and we hold our patients accountable to the steps they commit to taking in their sustainable recovery journey.
Some of our therapists and mental health professionals have personal recovery experience themselves. As such, our treatment team knows that freedom from these mental health disorders is the ultimate goal, and although achievable, we know this is often the most difficult process that any of our patients have ever faced. We recognize that the road to freedom is usually nonlinear, and that freedom comes at cost, requiring an investment of time and a willingness to accept support. Our goal is to help our patients break free from the thoughts, obsessions, and self-destructive behaviors that they have learned to use over time to cope with life’s challenges.
Our Commitment to Exceptional Patient Care
The SunCloud mission is to provide best-in-class individualized care to persons with complex co-occurring disorders using an integrated treatment model. We are dedicated to challenging the business-as-usual mental health system by aligning the incentives of all of us who are committed to improving the lives of our patients with complex co-occurring disorders and focusing on the long term value we can create – first and foremost, by creating a unified treatment experience for our patients and their families. By ensuring unparalleled medical and clinical advice in a supportive community, clients in partial hospitalization programs are better able to achieve their recovery goals.
Our integrated model is designed to treat the whole person, to target underlying biological, psychological, social, and spiritual causes of problematic symptoms for each individual patient taking a dimensional rather than categorical approach to care. We know that even within the same DSM V diagnosis, our patients have a tremendous amount of heterogeneity and do not always have the same disease despite having the same DSM V diagnosis. We seek to identify and treat the person’s disease rather than their DSM V diagnosis. We believe that mental illness, addiction, and eating disorders are brain diseases, which impact a person’s thinking, acting, and feeling organ; that no one asks to have a brain disease; and that good treatment prolongs life, increases quality of life, and improves overall health.
Therefore, at all times you can expect:
- Group therapy to begin and end on time.

- Individualized care through intensive treatment plans, including individual therapy and specialized programs.
- During admission, you will be assigned a treatment coordinator who will work with you to plan your course of treatment, make revisions with you weekly, and serve as your primary contact while at SunCloud Health. If at any time you feel that a change would be in your best interest, we encourage you to discuss this with your treatment team.

- SunCloud is a group-based program and treats developmental trauma through exposures that occur in process and other groups. We help you to identify and explore re-enactments (patterns in how you experience yourself, others, and authority figures) during groups and use experiential learning to facilitate corrective, healing experiences.
- Staff will lead psychoeducational DBT and mindfulness skills groups to support you in learning skills to cope with difficult feelings and manage symptoms, practicing those skills to navigate painful emotions and achieve symptom reduction and improve your day-to-day living experience.
- When appropriate, clinical staff will encourage exploration of deeper mental health issues associated with the onset and maintenance of your individual mental health conditions and struggles.
- Staff will make every effort to inform you at least a week in advance of any upcoming staff or group leader changes. We understand consistency is a crucial component of establishing safety and healing trauma.
- If at any time we believe the level or type of support we can provide at SunCloud is inadequate for your clinical condition or specific mental health challenges, we will work with you to make a medically sound recommendation and support you in accessing the level/type of care your condition warrants.
We will work with you in advance of discharge to create a discharge plan to support your transition to outpatient care. For planned discharges, your treatment coordinator will speak with your identified intensive outpatient program team prior to your discharge from PHP. - During your treatment in PHP/IOP, your team will work with you to provide medical monitoring, including a schedule for obtaining weights, vital signs, medication management needs, outpatient therapy, and random toxicology screens as needed.
Weekly at all locationsA Group Just For Families
Substance abuse (including addiction), eating disorder challenges (such as binge eating disorder, anorexia, and bulimia), and psychological trauma impact entire family systems. Frequently, the families develop dysfunctional roles, enmeshed boundaries, intimacy fears, and unhealthy communication patterns. Families consciously and unconsciously transmit destructive coping strategies, such as addiction, to the next generation. Thankfully, transformative recovery experiences can be passed on to up-and-coming generations, creating cultures of resilience for family members in place of cultures of despair.
Our weekly multi-family therapy group provides a safe therapeutic space in a supportive environment for family members of people receiving or considering services at SunCloud Health to embark on their own journeys, with authenticity and transparency. Family therapy sessions offer the possibility of recovery from codependent behaviors as well as life-changing explorations for all participants. They also provide a forum for families to share in their experiences in a group setting, learn healthy coping skills, build a strong support network, and to learn from others on how to both heal themselves and support their loved ones in their recovery.
Cost: Included for families with patients in SCH Partial Hospitalization Programs and Intensive Outpatient Programs
$45.00/family for all other families.
Please call us or email us if you are interested in Partial Hospitalization (PHP) treatment. (855) 956-2850 or info@suncloudhealth.com
PHP is often for patients stepping down from residential who still need intense structure and therapy during the day yet who are well enough to go home or spend the night at a sober living home. Our comprehensive behavioral health care team will work with your care coordinator in residential to determine if a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a good fit for you.
