OCD Treatment

Understanding OCD in Teens

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than just excessive worrying or needing things to be “just right”—it is a serious mental health condition that can significantly impact a teen’s daily life. OCD is characterized by persistent, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) performed to reduce distress.

At SunCloud Health, we understand how overwhelming OCD can be for teens and their families. Our evidence-based treatment programs help young people break free from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions, empowering them to regain control of their lives.

Signs and Symptoms of OCD in Teens

Signs of OCD typically begin in teenagers or young adults. If you notice that your teen is experiencing cycles of obsessions or compulsions, we urge you to seek help and not to postpone treatment hoping that this is “just a phase.”

OCD can present in different ways, but common symptoms include:

  • Persistent, unwanted thoughts that cause distress (obsessions)
  • Repetitive behaviors or mental rituals performed to reduce anxiety (compulsions)
  • Excessive fears of contamination, harm, or making mistakes
  • Avoidance of certain situations or activities due to obsessive fears
  • Difficulty concentrating at school due to intrusive thoughts
  • Significant distress or frustration when unable to perform compulsions

Our Approach to Treating Teen OCD

At SunCloud Health, we offer specialized, research-backed treatment to help teens manage OCD symptoms effectively. Our programs focus on breaking the cycle of obsessions and compulsions while teaching healthy coping strategies which can benefit them now and in the future.

We encourage family involvement in the treatment process though family support groups, family therapy, parent coaching, and more.

Personalized Treatment Plans

We develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each teen’s unique needs. We are proud to offer a variety of treatment options, allowing us to create a unique treatment plan for each patient. Treatments offered at SunCloud include:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): The gold standard for OCD treatment, ERP helps teens gradually face their fears while resisting compulsions in a safe, supportive environment.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps teens identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to OCD symptoms.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Teaches distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and mindfulness techniques to help manage anxiety related to OCD.
  • Medication Management (if needed): In some cases, medication can be a helpful part of a comprehensive treatment plan, and we work closely with families to determine the best approach.
  • Family Therapy: Educates and supports family members in understanding OCD and creating a supportive home environment.

Holistic and Integrated Care

In addition to traditional therapy, we incorporate holistic approaches to support overall well-being into our treatment plans. These help patients learn new skills and hobbies while developing healthy habits. Some options include:

  • Mindfulness and relaxation techniques
  • Art and music therapy
  • Physical activity and movement-based therapy
  • Nutritional and sleep support

Levels of Care

We offer two levels of care to meet teens where they are in their recovery journey:

  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): PHP runs 5 days a week, dedicating 6 hours each day to holistic treatment. This approach ensures that teens receive intensive care, guidance, and support as they navigate their path to recovery.
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): IOP is designed for those who need structured therapy but can maintain their daily activities, offering treatment 3-5 days a week for 3 hours each session. This program strikes a balance between therapeutic intervention and allowing adolescents to engage in their regular routines.

Ongoing Support for Lasting Recovery

At SunCloud Health, we believe that support doesn’t end when treatment does. We provide aftercare planning, peer support groups, and family involvement to help teens maintain their progress and build a fulfilling, balanced life.

We also work with your teen’s school to ensure a successful return to school if needed. This ensures that your teen will have the support and resources needed to thrive.
