Marcia Nickow: An addictions psychologist, group psychotherapist and trauma specialist, Marcia Nickow, PsyD., CADC, CGP, is Clinical Director of SunCloud Health Outpatient Treatment Center, leading clinical supervision groups and overseeing multidisciplinary teams at three locations. Dr. Nickow runs 14 weekly ongoing psychotherapy groups in her downtown Chicago private practice while also treating individuals and couples and supervising trainees.
With more than 30 years of experience, Dr. Nickow has worked with multicultural populations in private practice, inpatient, outpatient, halfway house, forensic, hospital, veterans’ hospital, school, community mental health, correctional and homeless outreach settings.
A presenter at conferences nationally and internationally, Dr. Nickow also has taught addictions, trauma, group psychotherapy, social psychology, and forensic courses in the doctoral Clinical Psychology and master’s Forensic Psychology programs at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology. She has taught year-long experiential courses on multicultural psychology and systemic racism.
Dr. Nickow formerly directed the clinical team at a nationally known residential treatment center. Her clinical interests include long-term group psychotherapy for recovery and resilience, intergenerational addiction and trauma, historical and race-based trauma and antiracist organizational transformation.
Co-author of A Group Therapist’s Guide to Process Addictions, Dr. Nickow also is co-recipient of the 2015 Alonzo Award for Excellence from the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) for her contributions to the scientific literature on psychodynamic group psychotherapy.
Dr. Nickow is co-chair of the Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma and Resilience Special Interest Group of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS) and board member of the Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health. She has a background in journalism, community organization and social justice.
