Understanding the Link Between Eating Disorders and Addiction

Why These Co-Occurring Conditions Require Integrated, Compassionate Care

Eating disorders and addiction are both serious, life-threatening conditions—and for many individuals, they don’t exist in isolation. Studies show that up to 50% of people with an eating disorder also struggle with substance misuse, and vice versa. Eating disorders and addiction are deeply interconnected, often fueled by the same underlying emotional pain, trauma, and coping patterns.

At SunCloud Health, we specialize in integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders, including eating disorders and addiction, including substance use. In fact, 26% of all SunCloud patients had a dual diagnosis of an eating disorder (ED) and a substance use disorder (SUD). By addressing both conditions simultaneously, we help individuals move beyond the cycle of symptom management and toward lasting recovery and emotional resilience.

Why Do These Conditions So Often Coexist?

There is no single cause of either an eating disorder or addiction—but there are many shared risk factors. Both conditions often emerge in response to emotional pain, trauma, identity struggles, or a desire for control.

Common overlapping risk factors include:

  • Childhood trauma or adverse experiences
  • Low self-esteem or body image distress
  • Perfectionism or people-pleasing tendencies
  • Anxiety, depression, or PTSD
  • Family history of addiction or eating disorders
  • High-pressure environments (academics, athletics, performance)

In some cases, substances may be used to dull painful emotions or suppress appetite. In others, eating disorder behaviors may function as a form of emotional regulation or self-punishment. Regardless of how they start, both conditions can quickly become compulsive and deeply entrenched—especially without proper treatment.

How the Cycle Reinforces Itself

When eating disorders and addiction are both present, they often reinforce one another in dangerous ways. For example:

  • A teen who restricts food to feel in control may begin using stimulants to suppress appetite or boost energy.
  • Someone who binges or purges may begin spending excessive amounts of time online to numb shame or as a distraction afterward.
  • A young adult in early recovery from substance use may relapse after the return of eating disorder behaviors—and vice versa.

Both disorders can also disrupt the brain’s reward system, making it more difficult to feel satisfaction, regulate emotions, or make healthy decisions. Over time, they erode trust in the body, self-worth, and interpersonal relationships.

Why Integrated Treatment Is Essential

Treating one condition while ignoring the other often leads to relapse in both. At SunCloud Health, we take a whole-person approach—treating the emotional, psychological, and physiological roots of both eating disorders and addiction simultaneously.

We understand that these behaviors are not about vanity or weakness—they’re often survival strategies that have become harmful over time. Recovery requires not only symptom reduction, but also compassionate exploration of the pain that drives them.

How SunCloud Health Treats Eating Disorders and Addiction

Our Institute for Eating Disorders and Addiction is uniquely designed to support individuals with dual diagnoses through a trauma-informed, relational approach. We also support patients with these co-occurring diagnoses in our other levels of care, including PHP and IOP. As a collaborative team, we treat adolescents, young adults, and adults who are navigating the complex intersections of body image, emotional regulation, identity, and addiction.

We offer three levels of care to meet individuals where they are:

  • Residential Treatment
  • Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  • Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our integrated treatment includes:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and medication management
  • Individual, family, and group therapy
  • Nutrition counseling and therapeutic meal support
  • Trauma-informed modalities including CPT, CBT, ACT, and DBT
  • Psychoeducation around addiction, disordered eating, and emotional regulation
  • Relapse prevention and coping skill development
  • Family involvement and ongoing aftercare planning

All care is collaborative, nonjudgmental, and highly individualized, recognizing that recovery is not one-size-fits-all.
