Intensive Outpatient Program

For those who need more than individual therapy, a higher level of care

Intensive outpatient provides stabilization for patients who are having difficulty managing their symptoms in traditional outpatient treatment.  The IOP treatment team will design individualized programs for patients with consideration to psychiatric diagnoses, developmental functioning, behavioral needs, family involvement and community resources.  Our treatment plan includes individual and group therapy, 12 step facilitation, peer support, psychiatric treatment and family intervention.  This comprehensive treatment approach is designed to help the patient return to a more functional, healthy and independent life.  Our IOP operates 3-5 days per week for three to five hours per day of programming, as a minimum.  Because every patient is unique, the recommended length of stay depends on each person’s clinical circumstances.

Adult IOP Hours, Northbrook:  Noon – 4:30 pm, M, W, F

Adult IOP Hours, Chicago:  Daytime Noon – 2:00 pm, Evenings 5:00-9:00 pm, M, T, Th, F

This bio-psycho-social-spiritual treatment program uses evidenced based-treatment including dialectic behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness practices, and twelve step facilitation to help patients develop coping skills. Our integrative program is designed to coordinate treatment across disorders in order to eliminate the need for patients having to choose which of their disorders deserves priority in terms of treatment. The disruption this type of “tracked” approach creates for the patient in their recovery, is eliminated by our cohesive approach which puts the patient at the center of their treatment.

Goals of the program are to assist patients in:

  • Medication management and medication assisted treatment
  • Effectively managing stress and overwhelming emotions using emotion and distress management skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills, and mindfulness skills.
  • Developing effective patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
  • Resolving problems through building reliable systems of support and identifying/building upon their strengths
  • Providing education that will give knowledge and skills to patients and families to cope with current and future stressors.
  • Educating patients and families about mental illness, eating disorders and substance use disorders to engage them in treatment and recovery activities.
  • Employing a chronic illness management model to support patients in maintaining long term wellness.

Sober (overnight) Living While In Treatment:

Contact us for more information on several options we have for patients who may want or need an overnight component to their treatment at SCH.  If you don’t live in the area, or if you simply need to be away from home while in our IOP, we can refer you to several sober living homes in the area such as Bridges, Stairway to Freedom, Bridgehaus and A Fresh Start to provide a sober and accountable living environment for our patients. Further, there are several local hotels very close by with whom we can have discounted agreements in place for our patients.  Depending on the level of care needed, we will work with you to determine what makes sense for you.  Having an overnight option for our program enables us to work with patients from all over the country and not just from Chicago.

A GROUP FOR FAMILIES- Wednesdays from 5:00-6:15 pm.

Addictions, eating disorders and psychological trauma impact entire family systems. Frequently, the families develop dysfunctional roles, enmeshed boundaries, intimacy fears and unhealthy communication patterns.

This weekly multifamily group provides a safe therapeutic space for family members of people receiving or considering services at SunCloud Health to embark on their own journeys, with authenticity and transparency.

Families consciously and unconsciously transmit destructive coping strategies, such as addiction, to the next generation. Thankfully, transformative recovery experiences can be passed on to up-and-coming generations, creating cultures of resilience for family members in place of cultures of despair. This group will offer the possibility of recovery from codependent behaviors as well as life-changing explorations for all participants.  It will also provide a forum for families to share in their experiences, and to learn from others on how to both heal themselves and support their loved ones in their recovery.

Cost:  Included for families with patients in SCH IOP Program

45.00/family for all other families.
