Dr. Beth Fishman, PhD

Dr. Beth Fishman is a clinical psychologist with over 25 years’ experience in the addiction field.  She specializes in psychoeducational group experiences, family systems theory, 12-Step facilitation, the resolution of spiritual concerns, meditation practices from a variety of traditions, mindfulness techniques, and support for family members whose loved ones are in treatment.  She was the founding Director of the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at the University of South Florida and is the founding Manager of the Jewish Center for Addiction at Jewish Child and Family Services.

Dr. Fishman has worked at universities, Veterans’ Administration Hospitals, private and non-for-profit inpatient and outpatient hospital and social service settings.  She is a respected and beloved teacher and trainer, bringing warmth and equanimity into the group session along with creative practices and lively discussion of challenging material.  Dr. Fishman’s approach to healing is to look below the symptom surface for the core issues that unite clients and allow healing to occur between and among participants.  She believes that within each person is a pure, untouched center that can be revealed and called upon in the healing process.  Dr. Fishman has presented at regional and national conferences on a variety of topics related to addiction recovery as well as the intersection of recovery and Judaism, including the Annual Conference for the US Department of Education, Limmud Chicago, the Naomi Ruth Cohen Institute.

Dr. Fishman has a particular focus on the recognition of spirituality as a fundamental human need and capacity.  She has worked with individuals from a broad range of faith traditions, encouraging clients to draw familiar faith language and practices into their recovery.  She believes that communities as a whole can be wounded, and can find healing at the communal level to the benefit of all. Her communal healing work includes having co-founded the Oral Testimonies Project of the Holocaust Museum and Educational Center in St. Petersburg FL, the Jewish Meditation Coalition of Tampa Bay, and the Jewish Addiction Awareness Network.  Dr. Fishman was also a certified interviewer for the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation.   She was the recipient of a Dorot Foundation Fellowship which supported her study at both Modern Orthodox and Liberal settings in Jerusalem.

As the Manager of the Jewish Center for Addiction at JCFS, she offers education and support to Chicagoland Jews in recovery and training for treatment professionals.  She assists Jewish communities around the country in developing programs to address addiction and helps synagogues create safe sacred space vis a vis alcohol use.

Dr. Fishman received her BA in Biological Psychology at Mount Holyoke College and her PhD in Clinical Health Psychology at the medical campus of the University of Alabama.  She is currently attaining certification as a Spiritual Director.  Dr. Fishman is licensed as a Clinical Psychologist by the State of Illinois and is a member of the Illinois Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association.
